ARTIST AND EQUESTRIAN
Doreen Irwin worked her way through college doing illustrations for newspaper ads. Her professional art background and her love of horses has been combined to produce several pieces of Equine Art. Her subjects are often her own horses or horses showing at Shandoni Ranch where Doreen has been putting on horse shows for several years. She is also interested in painting other animals and portraits of people.
Doreen has had her works exhibited several times at the California State Fair, The Horse Expo in Sacramento,CA, the Draft Horse Classic in Grass Valley,CA, the Hubbard Museum of the Horse in Ruidoso Downs, NM, and other art galleries in California. Some of her Equine art works have also been accepted in prestigious shows such as the “Bosque Art Classic” in Clifton,Texas, and “The American Academy of Equine Art Juried Exhibition” in Georgetown, KY. Some of her pieces have graced the covers of the “Chronicle of the Horse” and other magazines. Doreen was also featured as a horse portrait artist in the USEF “Equestrian” Magazine, and has been a “Hits” Poster Artist for the Ocala Horse Show. As of 2016, Doreen has had 20 Solo Shows in the Sacramento area, and has received numerous awards at the above shows.
Shandoni Ranch was opened in 1975 by Doreen and her family where she currently boards, puts on horse shows, and raises and trains horses. Over many years, Doreen has given lessons to hundreds of riding students, many who have become professional trainers and judges. A lifelong dedicated horsewoman, Doreen Irwin trained and sold many horses for many owners. She has also bred and developed numerous young horses (TB/Warmbloods) to become lovely show horses consistently winning in pleasure, hunters and jumpers in local and rated shows. Shandoni Ranch has been a lovely and comfortable horse show facility since the “80’s ... hosting Hunter/Jumper and Western Shows. Many young people started their riding careers at Shandoni Ranch. Presently, the facility hosts five SAHJA Hunter/Jumper shows during the summer season.

Doreen Irwin has been a choral director in the Sacramento area for several years -- teaching at Oakmont High School and most recently (retiring, after 37 years, in May, 2013) at Sacramento City College. At the college, she also taught voice classes and piano. Since 1995, Ms. Irwin toured every other summer with the SCC Evening Chorale to 17 different countries.
Also, Doreen’s SCC choral group was invited to perform their own solo concert under her direction at Carnegie Hall in May 2012. Doreen again conducted her own group the “Doreen Irwin Singers” at Carnegie Hall in May of 2015. Since 2013, she has continued this post-retirement group performing several wonderful concerts and planning for many in the future.
Ms. Irwin has 43 published choral compositions for SSA, SSAA, and SATB Voicings. There are several Christmas pieces, one arranged for band as well as SA and SATB choir. There are also original jazz ballads, folk songs, arrangements of folk songs, and some gospel style pieces. Publishers are Elkan Vogel, National Music and Shawnee Press and Plymouth Music.
